Ballard finishes dominating performance

Trent Weatherman of Ballard of Huxley won his second consecutive wrestling state championship Saturday night, but he wanted the Bombers’ wrestling team to be the talk of the Class 2-A town.

Ballard put on an amazing four-day show of domination to win its second straight team title and broke some records before a sellout crowd of 15,439 at Wells Fargo Arena.

Weatherman, an Iowa State recruit, was joined by Dakota Bauer at 112, Weatherman’s brother Tanner at 135, Tanner Hiatt at 140 and Weatherman’s cousin Brock, who defended his 171-pound title, in winning individual championships.

Denver-Tripoli was second with 881/2 points. Clear Lake was one point back in third.
The victory margin of 1311/2 points shattered the former best of 991/2 by Don Bosco of Gilbertville in 1979.
Denver-Tripoli had a champion in 119-pounder Levi Wolfensperger.

Clear Lake, which was expecting to battle with Ballard for the team title, had a champion in 125-pounder Joe Colon, who was the only wrestler to beat Wolfensperger this season, added this title to his 103-pound crown in 2007 with a 4-1 victory over Tyler Grask of Ballard.

Ballard had what is believed to be a record nine finalists. No records for finalists have been kept by the Iowa High School Athletic Association.

The top-ranked Bombers finished with 220 points, five shy of tying the tournament mark set by Waverly-Shell Rock last year.

“We’re not there yet, but we hope everybody will say Ballard’s the best team in history,” Weatherman said after scoring a 19-4 technical fall over Ted Kruger of Sibley-Ocheyedan.

The Bombers had a shot at Council Bluffs Lewis Central’s state record for most individual champions in a traditional tournament with six in 2001.

Waverly-Shell Rock’s record came last year in winning the Class 3-A title, the same time the Bombers set the Class 2-A record with 1811/2 points.

Weatherman finished with three pins and a technical fall. He can add to a 46-0 record in the dual-meet state tournament Saturday in Cedar Rapids.
