Waverly-Shell Rock wins again; Championship moments for Go-Hawks, Moore, Roosevelt

Championship moments unfolded in all shapes and styles Saturday during the Class 3-A state wrestling tournament at Wells Fargo Arena.

For Waverly-Shell Rock, victory came in the form of a dynasty-building third team title in five seasons.

For Iowa City West junior Nick Moore, pride blurred with the promise of a shot at a fourth title next year.

And for Des Moines Roosevelt, success meant two never-before accomplishments for the state's biggest city.

Waverly-Shell Rock piled up 146.5 points in front of 15,439 fans - demanding trophy-case space next to its 2005 and 2008 titles - followed by West (138.5) and Roosevelt (122.5).

Waverly-Shell Rock graduated 10 starters from last season's championship team, but won anyway.

"We're not a dynasty," Go-Hawks coach Rick Caldwell said, "but we're a good program."
The potential bad news for big schools? All five finalists return next season.

"And we're darn small for 3-A," Caldwell said. "We're like 60th or so out of 64 in the state."

As Don Bosco of Gilbertville's Bart Reiter finished off Iowa's 18th four-title career in Class 1-A, another potential four-timer emerged.

Moore won his third championship, 2-1, against Urbandale's Josiah South at 152.

In 2010, the chase begins for No. 4.

"I heard everyone cheering for (Reiter) - the whole crowd," said Moore, 45-0. "I kind of whispered it to myself, 'I'd like that.' "

Moore said he and South wrestled a smart match, but expressed disappointment at the low-scoring result.

"Probably the most boring match of the night," Moore said.

Roosevelt, meanwhile, reveled in the role of party-crasher. No Des Moines program had finished top three at the tournament.

Until Saturday.

And no Des Moines public school wrestler had won two individual titles before John Nicholson beat Urbandale's Michael Moreno 3-2 at 160 one season after a title at 152.

"It's nice to get little bits of history," Roosevelt coach Jay Groth said. "We're going out for victories more than history, though. Ask me tomorrow, though, and I'll be pretty proud."

Nicholson fashioned a takedown with 30 seconds left to move ahead 3-1 before holding off Moreno in their 10th career meeting.

The victory came a day after Nicholson recorded the buzz victory of the tournament against national No. 1-ranked Derek St. John of Iowa City West.

"That would be forgotten if I didn't do it tonight," said Nicholson, who finished 35-2 and will wrestle next season at Old Dominion University.

In an early head-to-head matchup involving team leaders, Roosevelt freshman John Meeks capped a perfect season with a 5-3 championship win at 119 pounds against Waverly-Shell Rock sophomore Jordan Rinken.

"I'm looking for three more state titles," said Meeks, 39-0. "It doesn't stop here."

That early-night setback for the Go-Hawks came one weight after Valley's Brandon Jones stopped Iowa's most decorated freshman - Waverly-Shell Rock's Eric DeVos, at 112.

DeVos won two Minnesota state titles at Apple Valley before transferring. Minnesota allows seventh- and eighth-graders to compete for varsity championships.

In their only previous meeting this season, DeVos stopped the Valley junior in double-overtime. This time, Jones used a takedown 29 seconds into overtime to win, 3-1.

"Some guys go out on the mat already beat," said Jones, 37-3. "I knew he's good, I know I'm good. I just went out there and performed."

The Go-Hawks stopped the title-chasing skid with Cody Caldwell's 9-1 victory against Clinton's Dom Chase at 125.

Team-trophy fate was clinched at 135, as junior Jake Ballweg routed Prairie freshman Zach Witte, 11-0.

"It really sucked to lose those first two (title matches Saturday) because we wanted to win those," said Ballweg, 45-3, and winner of a title at 119 last season, "but it's been pretty amazing what we've accomplished as a team."

Central Iowa crowned another multi-title champ in Urbandale junior Evan Knight. Last season, Knight won at 160. On Saturday, he took 189 with a 7-3 win over Roosevelt's Matt Riley.

Riley beat Knight at this year's district tournament.

"It definitely lit my fire for this tournament," Knight said.
