Ames, Ia. — Three meets. Three days.
No big deal.
Despite that grueling blizzard and ice-altered schedule, Indianola advanced to the championship match in Saturday's Jack Mendenhall Duals before falling 42-17 to Minnesota powerhouse program Owatonna.
"Actually, I think the three days really helped us out a lot," said the Indians' second-ranked 145-pounder Cody Swim, who along with four teammates swept his matches. "It prepared us for the state tournament - getting used to making weight on Thursday, Friday and Saturday."
Swim won his last bout by major decision, as did second-ranked 160-pounder Spencer BeLieu, who gave Indianola an 11-9 lead before Owatonna scored three straight pins and pulled away.
The Indians' Vinny Gomez (130), Wade Edgington (125) and Connor Humphrey (135) also went 4-0.
"I was really proud of a couple guys going 4-0," Swim said. "We've stepped it up in the past week."
Owatonna, ranked fourth in Minnesota's largest class, AAA, used seven pins to beat Southeast Polk 51-16 to advance to the championship.
"We were right in some matches, then the next thing, we were on our back and getting pinned," said Rams coach Jason Christensen, whose team beat Marshalltown 59-15 to earn third place. "They are pinners: A great team."
Cory Clark, the top-ranked Class 3A wrestler at 112, went 4-0 for the Rams, as did teammates Alex Meyer and Dylan Blackford.
Clark won a state title last year at 103.
Ames finished sixth after a 44-30 loss to Odebolt-Arthur/Battle Creek-Ida Grove.
The Little Cyclones' ranked wrestlers Luke Swalla (140), Ben Swalla (152) and Jake Agnitsch (112) won all their bouts.
East won two matches, and Waukee beat Council Bluffs Jefferson.
Marshalltown posted two wins, and Fort Dodge won one.
East's Chris Avery, ranked third at 135, went 4-0 and has won nine of his 11 matches this season by fall.
