At least not on the mat, anyway.

The Mason City junior isn’t always pretty during wrestling matches, but things are always physical.

On Saturday, the Mason City junior was one of three Mohawks to record falls in a 40-21 loss to unbeaten and fourth-ranked (3A) West Des Moines Valley.

“I just go out there and try to go as hard as I can,” Flores said. “You could say I’m aggressive, I guess.”

Flores and Clint Underwood were knotted at 6-6 in the third period at 135 pounds when he took Underwood to his back to record the final pin of the day for Mason City.

Travis Mallo (171) and Jared Bartel (189) each recorded falls to help Mason City jump to a 12-4 lead.

From there, the Mohawks scrapped but fell short.

Mason City lost three matches by a point but it wasn’t any consolation to coach Dusty Rhodes.

“We won a couple close matches but we need to win all the close matches in a dual meet like that,” Rhodes said. “We’re close. We are getting there. Our guys just have to decide if they want to just be close or if they want to get there in the next few weeks.”

The loss gave Valley the CIML Iowa dual title with a 5-0 conference mark. Mason City finishes its conference dual season with a 4-1 mark. The CIML conference meet, which includes teams from the Iowa, Central and Metro leagues, is Friday.

“It’s second in the CIML Iowa instead of first,” Rhodes said. “Nobody likes to lose.”

Saturday was the final tune-up before the biggest three dates on the Mason City schedule.

After Friday’s conference meet, the Mohawks compete in districts in Fort Dodge then the state tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Flores, for one, thinks Mason City’s best wrestling is still ahead of them.

“I think we can be one of the better teams. We can hang with top-ranked teams,” Flores said. “We just have to keep working hard in the room.”
