BELMOND — It didn’t come down to the wire this year.

The Osage wrestling team reclaimed its spot atop the North Iowa Conference by landing 10 wrestlers in the finals and crowning six champs to tally 233 points, easily outdistancing LMNK.

LMNK finished with 161 points with Forest City taking third with 158.5.

“Ten guys in the finals is a pretty good day,” Osage coach Brent Jennings said. “We had some good performances.”

Osage had won the conference five years running before Forest City nipped the Green Devils last year.

One of the highlights of the day came at 135 pounds where Osage’s top-ranked Trevor Hejhal (135) trailed LMNK’s Spencer Capitani 11-6 at one point.

Hejhal, though, stormed back and recorded a third-period pin.

“That says a lot about a kid who was down like that to come back,” Jennings said.

Joe Michels (103), Jobe Goodale (112), Brandon Barker (130), Brent Blaser (140) and Brad Ringhofer (171) each won titles for Osage.

Forest City and LMNK each had two champs.

The Indians’ Cole Anderson (119) avenged Thursday’s loss to Osage’s Todd Janka in the finals while Aaron Sorenson won the 145-pound bracket.

Royce Byrnes (152) and Jake Brekken (Hwt) won titles for LMNK.

The tournament, though, was missing a little something.

Defending state champs Alex Spooner (112, Forest City) and Derric Thomas (130, Newman) each sat out the tournament due to injury precautions.

Newman’s lone champ was Tevin Brinson at 160 pounds.

“Tevin Brinson is really wrestling well,” Newman coach Mark Bertsch said.
