Huskies advance 10 to districts

RICEVILLE — Prior to Saturday’s Class 1A sectional meet, it was a foregone conclusion that the team to beat would be fourth-ranked Nashua-Plainfield.

The Huskies didn’t disappoint, crowning six champions while advancing 10 wrestlers total in accumulating 259 points.

“We’re happy with the day’s result but you always want more as a coach,” Nashua-Plainfield coach Al Frost said. “We wanted to get everything we could and there were a couple more matches we could have won to get another kid on to districts, but I think we’ll take the results.”

Blake Dietz upset sixth-ranked Tyler Bartels of Riceville, winning the 103-pound title, 15-13.

“Dietz looked fantastic,” Frost said.

Eighth-ranked 112-pounder Garrett Bellinger followed suit for the Huskies, scoring a 9-0 major decision over Central Springs’ Michael Faught.

Kyler Deutsch (125), Taylor Wedeking (140), fifth-ranked Matthew Dettmer (145) and top-ranked Caleb Wilken (285) each recorded pins en route to claiming titles.

“We’ve had some big goals all year and we’ve been working hard to make them come true,” Wilken said.

Wilken, who pinned North Butler’s Lee Fenneman in 1 minute, 40 seconds in his championship match to improve to 34-1 overall, said there’s a lot of room for improvement.

“A match is never easy,” Wilken said. “I had to come out and wrestle my own matches.

“It was tough getting anything going in my first match but I was able to get a pin (over St. Ansgar’s Spencer Hulshizer) at the end of the second period and then in my second match I just did what my coaches keep telling me to do and got ’er done.”

Andy Glaser (152), Jacob Frost (160), Clinton Deutsch (171) and Daniel Theilen (189) each dropped their championship match.

“What added to the icing on the cake was we won some matches that we maybe weren’t supposed to win,” coach Frost said.

Nashua-Plainfield will wrestle Sumner-Fredericksburg in a regional dual at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in Nashua.

Rockford will also wrestle on Tuesday after edging Newman Catholic by 12 points for second place, finishing with 142 points.

“Nashua is a well-coached team and coach Frost does a good job and it seems like we’re always playing catch-up with them,” said Rockford coach Todd Seibert, whose team faces South Winneshiek. “We have a pretty solid team and I thought our kids wrestled tough.”

The Warriors crowned two champions in Spencer Kelly (135) and Jason O’Connor (152). Calvin Schriever also advanced to the district meet at 119 pounds.

“Jason’s been coming on strong the whole year and really stepped it up,” Seibert said. “We knew it was going to be tough because Glaser’s a tough kid. I’m also happy with Spencer Kelly, beating Linkenmeyer. He worked on some things during the week and finally got it all put together.”

Despite finishing third, Newman advanced five wrestlers, with Matt Bertsch (119), top-ranked Derric Thomas (130) and eighth-ranked Tevin Brinson (160) winning titles.

“I thought we got a lot out of our kids,” Newman coach Mark Bertsch said. “I thought maybe we could get six guys to the districts and we came close.

“It was good to have Matt and Derric back in the lineup. It was also nice to see Todd advance after being out for almost three quarters of the season and then as a coach, you have to like Tanner Gribben, finally getting some exposure.”

North Butler’s Casey Krull (171), Central Springs’ third-ranked Andrew Nodtvedt (189) and St. Ansgar’s Ian Halliday (215) also won titles.

Frost said Saturday’s district meet at Parkersburg will be grueling with top-ranked Don Bosco in the mix, but his main focus for now is Sumner-Fredericksburg on Tuesday.

“The top two kids from the other side will be tough and we’ll start focusing on that on Wednesday,” the coach said. “We can’t get too far ahead of ourselves because we know we have to go out there and wrestle on Tuesday night.”
