Ballard whipped PCM and Webster City by respective scores of 66-10 and 60-15 to remain unbeaten on the season at 29-0. The Bombers didn’t have their best performance according to head coach Jeff Weatherman, but it was still way more than enough to punch a ticket to Cedar Rapids’ U.S. Cellular Center for a chance at a third straight 2A state dual title.
“It’s a big step for us,” Weatherman said. “Sometimes you take it for granted since we’ve been there before. I thought we wrestled a little flat, but that can be expected because we hadn’t practiced since Sunday because of the weather.”
All 11 of Ballard’s district qualifiers from Saturday’s sectional meet went undefeated on Wednesday.
Brock Weatherman scored two pins at 171 pounds, while Willie Miklus (140), Tanner Weatherman (152), Brad Mickelson (160) and Dillon Weatherman (189) each picked up one pin and a technical fall. Dakota Bauer scored two technical falls at 130, and Ross Larson added a major decision and a pin at 215 for the Bombers.
Tim Miklus and Clinton Eichinger finished with one pin apiece at 112 and 285, respectively, while also receiving one forfeit apiece. Tanner Hiatt had a technical fall and a forfeit at 140, Dillon Hansen had one victory by decision and one forfeit at 103 and Bo Cosens earned a pin in his only match against PCM’s Zach Waddell at 135.
The Bombers will now focus on districts, and then prepare to defend its 2A traditional state wrestling title at the state meet in Des Moines’ Wells Fargo Arena next Wednesday through Saturday.
“Get us back in the room a couple days and we’ll be ready to go at districts,” Weatherman said. “We’ve got 11 guys there, and we want to get 11 through.”
Ballard’s district meet at Conrad this Saturday is set to begin at noon.
