Well folks we are less than a hour a way from one of the most talent filled turnys in the state. Here is a little breakdown from the Predicament:
Six of The Predicament's top eight State Tournament teams in Class 3A will be there, along with a pair of teams in The Predicament's Class 2A State Tournament Team rankings.
3A second-ranked Iowa City West heads the field, followed by No. 3 Bettendorf, No. 4 Urbandale, No. 5 Indianola, No. 6 Des Moines Roosevelt, No. 8 Southeast Polk and 2A's No. 6 Centerville and No. 9 Dallas Center-Grimes.
In all, there could be as many as 57 ranked wrestlers competing, including eight of the top-ranked individuals in 3A and a total of 25 top-three ranked individuals.
There is a chance to see the No. 1 and 2 3A wrestlers face off at five weights, but don't be surprised if at least one of those matches doesn't happen, because of the quality of the rest of the competition.
At 103, the top-three ranked 3A wrestlers are there. Freshmen Kegan Wakefield of Iowa City West and Colby Knight of Urbandale are No. 1 and 2, respectively. Ranked third in 3A is Drake Swarm of Bettendorf. Add into the mix 2A's third-ranked Pryce Creighton of Dallas Center-Grimes and you have the chance for two outstanding semifinals, let alone title bout.
____________________________________________________________________________________
103 finals will be a dandy, Wakefield vs Knight (#1 vs # 2) cant wait to see this one
112 finals will be none other than clark vs ryan should be a chess match
125 finals will be meeks vs perin
130 finals will be blackford vs
135 finals will be scholossier vs risher
140 finals will be moreno vs chace
Five 3A ranked wrestlers highlight the 112-pound class. Returning State champ and top-ranked Cory Clark of Southeast Polk could meet No. 2 Jack Hathaway of Iowa City West in the finals, but in their way are No. 4 Connor Ryan of North Scott, No. 8 Johnny Jaeger of Dowling Catholic and No. 9 Jake Agnitsch of Ames. Another wrestler to watch will be Ritchie Eikenberry of Bettendorf.
The next possible No. 1 vs. No. 2 match is at 152, where No. 1 Michael Kelly of Cedar Falls and No. 2 Joey Trizzino of Bettendorf are at, in probably the toughest weight class of the tournament. Also there will be No. 3 Justin Koethe of Iowa City West, No. 4 Ben Swalla of Ames, No. 5 Andrew Cartwright of Fort Madison and No. 7 Alex Meyer of Southeast Polk.
At 160, Class 3A top-ranked Nick Moore of Iowa City West is the heavy favorite, but could face one - and possibly two - second-ranked wrestlers. Spencer BeLieu of Indianola is ranked No. 2 in 3A and Ethan Moorman of Centerville is second in 2A. Those two will likely be the 2 and 3 seeds, so the winner of that potential match could face Moore in the title bout. But if one of them happens to be the four seed, Moore could meet both in a matter of hours.
And finally, at 171, top-ranked Michael Moreno of Urbandale and No. 2 Walt Gillmor of North Scott could meet up. But also there to make that difficult will be No. 3 Nate Shaw of Bettendorf, No. 5 A.J. McBroom of Southeast Polk and No. 10 David Solis of Iowa City West. Add 2A No. 2 Mike England in there as well and there should be some outstanding quarterfinal and semifinal bouts.
Another 1 vs. 2 could happen at 189, but from different classes. Top-ranked 3A wrestler Evan Knight of Urbandale and 2A No. 2 Trevor Voelker of Dallas Center-Grimes will have to make it through another tough weight if they want to meet down the road. 3A's No. 3 Matt Riley of Des Moines Roosevelt, No. 4 Brandon Abernathy of Indianola, No. 5 Joe Bell of Southeast Polk and eighth-ranked Bryce Sellers of North Scott are also there.
And although those may be the most talked about weights heading into the tournament, many of the others are loaded as well.
At 119, 3A No. 5 Taylor Wickett of Bettendorf and No. 6 Jon Skrada of Iowa City West are the pre-tournament favorites.
At 125, returning State champ John Meeks of Des Moines Roosevelt is ranked No. 1. Also expected to be there are No. 4 Adam Perrin of North Scott, a former State champ in his own right, and No. 5 Alex Hernandez of Bettendorf. A possible spoiler is Drew Stewart of Southeast Polk.
Class 3A No. 4 Duane Richardson of CB Thomas Jefferson is a slight favorite in a 130-pound bracket that includes No. 6 Dylan Blackford of Southeast Polk, No. 7 Vinnie Gomez of Indianola and No. 10 David Lewis of Bettendorf.
At 135, 3A's No. 2 Bo Schlosser of Bettendorf and No. 7 Gradey Gambrall of Iowa City West could be threatened by 2A No. 5 Kyler Risher of Centerville.
Five 3A ranked wrestlers are at 140, including top-ranked Gabriel Moreno of Urbandale. Also in the field are No. 3 Blake Meeks of Des Moines Roosevelt, No. 5 Luke Swalla of Ames, No. 6 Dominic Chase of Bettendorf and No. 7 Garrett Hathaway of Iowa City West.
At 145, Class 3A No. 2 Cody Swim of Indianola and No. 4 Trevor Duke of Burlington will be joined by 2A's ninth-ranked David Kellogg of Dallas Center-Grimes. Austin Pauley of Fort Madison is an unranked wrestler who could make some noise.
Iowa City West freshman Mickey Pelfrey is ranked fifth in 3A at 215. No. 8 Grant Riesberg of Dowling Catholic and No. 10 Kyle O'Mara of Indianola are also in the field.
And at heavyweight, No. 2 Brodie Berrie of Bettendorf and No. 3 Nolan Proehl of Davenport West could be on a collision course. But standing in the way might be No. 6 Dakota Tennant of Des Moines Roosevelt or 2A's No. 8 Zach Bauer of Dallas Center-Grimes.
I need to tell you that you might want to get here early if you want a seat because it is going to be full.
